OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5, a major upgrade to ChatGPT that expands the model’s capabilities and makes it more flexible and reliable. The new version is already live on OpenAI’s website and will soon be integrated into user profiles.
What’s New in GPT-5?
- Accessibility: GPT-5 is free for all users. Free-tier users will automatically switch to GPT-5 mini once their main usage period ends.
- Intelligence and Reliability: The model hallucinates less and provides more accurate responses. Its writing style has become more natural and less “AI-like.”
- Service Integrations: GPT-5 can now connect to Gmail and Google Calendar (initially for Pro users), allowing it to better understand users’ schedules. Subscribers can integrate the model with documents, emails, meetings, and chats.
- Settings and Modes: The improved Study Mode offers personalized, step-by-step learning assistance. Voice Mode is now available to all users, with customizable responses (e.g., answer with only one word). Subscribers can also change the interface color scheme.
- Real-Time Router: GPT-5 uses a real-time router that adjusts how much “thinking” the model does depending on the complexity of the task, speeding up or slowing down responses as needed.
Microsoft and GPT-5
Microsoft announced that GPT-5 will be available for free in Copilot for all licensed Microsoft 365 users. The model will gradually become available to non-licensed users as well. GPT-5 in Copilot uses the same real-time router to modulate the amount of reasoning depending on each task.
The GPT-5 Presentation
The launch event was somewhat chaotic: demos took longer than expected, microphones needed replacement, and there was background noise. Still, the model is now available for free usage and demonstrates strong functionality. GPT-5 is positioned as a new paradigm in AI, enabling faster and more accurate “thinking” than any previous versions.
