Yamaha announced a new handheld controller that enables a boat captain to control the boat from anywhere onboard. The remote is compatible with Yamaha’s Helm Master EX control system, which is designed to make boating more accessible.
Helm Master EX Wireless Control: A New Way to Maneuver Boats
The Helm Master EX Wireless Control looks like an upgraded version of the Nintendo Wii Nunchuk controller. It was announced at the 2025 Miami International Boat Show, but will only be available for dealer installation by Fall 2025. The price for the controller has not been revealed yet, but for single-engine boats, the entire system upgrade is priced over $12,000.
Helm Master EX Control System and Its Features
Yamaha first launched the Helm Master EX modular system in 2020, aiming to simplify operation for boats with multiple engines. The system features physical controls, touchscreen controls, and can be upgraded with autopilot for route following or position holding. It also includes a joystick that simplifies throttle and steering controls.
Enhancing Boat Maneuverability and Convenience
This new remote makes it easier for captains to operate the boat during launch or docking. The captain can maneuver the boat with one hand, while using the other hand to secure lines or adjust fenders. The remote’s battery lasts for around eight hours, and can be recharged by docking it in a charging cradle that can be installed anywhere on the boat.
Safety Features: Waterproof, Buoyant, and Overboard Detection
The remote is waterproof and buoyant, with an integrated overboard detection system. It can connect to up to eight fobs (two are included), worn by the captain and passengers. If someone falls overboard, the boat will stop completely, idling or turning off its engines, depending on the situation.
